Ghassan Alyousif and Dina play on one oud
Hi All,
First time poster.
Took up Oud ( and music) late in life...... but very much a beginner, just can`t put it down!
Anyway, I absolutely love this piece of music on youtube.. sorry i dont know how to past link here but it has the subject title... its a piece by
Ahmed Fathi ( Yemeni), from 5.00 to 8.35, played by Ghassan and Dina... its just wonderful.
Can some one tell me :
1. what tuning is used in this piece?
2. what maqam?
3. can someone please do a sheet music for this or a simple version of it, if only before the percussion join in.
what do others think of this piece.

Hi Samir.
This piece is inspired by Ahmed Fathi and not composed by him but by Ghassan
The tuning used is the Iraqi FA DO RE sol do fa. Dina is out of tune throughout the complete video.
I think it's in Nahawand DO.

I believe it the Longa Riyad (Farah Faza) by Riyad al-Sunbati, you can find the sheet music for this on Issa Boulos' site.

You are talking about the melody that starts at about 7:02, right? Nice ballad-like melody. Would love to see the music, too. (Ikariotika is
correct: The first piece is "Longa Riad".)
I looked for the YouTube video of the two Turkish ud players really "hot-doggin'" on one ud...couldn't find it though.

They synchronize very well. But I don't like the as-fast-and-as-strong-as-possible style at all.

Hi Reda & Hama,
Thank you for the correction.
Fingering for Nahawand on DO ( DO minor). Pls correct me if I am wrong. I tune G A D g c. so is the fingering as follows ( in the first
position) :
3rd finger on A = Do ,
open D , 1st finger on D = E flat, 3rd finger on D = F natural,
open g, 1st finger on g =a flat , 4th finger on g = b natural ,
open c.
Again correct me pls, in F to f tuning, only difference is you play open C and open D strings ?

The fingering is correct. On the way up it's B natural and on the way down it B flat (3rd finger on g string). It is not necessary that every B should
be natural if followed by C and flat if preceded by C. The way up/down means when the melody's direction is upward/downward.
It is called the half first position.. I don't know if it's the correct name in English.. In French 'la demi premiere position' and in arabic نصف الوضع الأول.
But I didn't understand your question about the F to f tuning..
