6 raga lessons on sitar

Hi Folks... a sitar student came over today and we touched on 6 ragas.

This is not oud, but ragas have a great similarity to makams... so perhaps this can be of interest to some :)

I have a sitar ( don't play like you...just a bit)! I practice yoga and i like indian music ! But i 'll try also with the oud!!
I'm fallowing your work and i find it extremally intersting!
:applause::applause:
In my performances I use also a medival lute (I'll send some pictures,) an acustic guitar, a sitar and an oud! But is amazing how you have concentrated most of that sounds in your incredible instruments!

You are very kind! Your appreciation feels very warm, thanks. Sometimes I feel that I have spent so much time learning and developing things, and very little time focusing on the career side of things --- so at times I am in a bit of a vacuum.

My long term goal is to combine the two systems of raga and makam, and in fact my "ragmakam CD" is almost finished and will be out soon. I really hope some people will also catch on to this idea and that it will develop. When the CD is out, I will post lesson vids which will explain how all the "ragmakam" on the CD work. This way hopefully the music itself will have more interest and meaning.

I am interested to hear and see you performance - and instruments. Sounds WONDERFUL! Please post. Yes, I am trying to condense a lot of these sounds into just one instrument. ...and, yes, it sort of works:cool: ...however, I have finally realised that an oud is an oud. I tried to combine it with a sarod, but in the end I am letting it find it's own way, it's own soul and sound - since it is not an oud anymore. But the main point is that makams can be played on it. (and ragas also)

What part of Italy are you from? I used to go very often to Ravenna and Venice, also Roma... but not so often these days.

Hi Edward, yes though it's a bit off topic thanks for posting the sitar clips; and like Nicola I also am learning to play this amazing instrument and interested in Indian and Arabic musics. I agree- an oud is an oud and a sitar a sitar, each with it's own sound and technique.
:airguitar:on the subject of sitars, have you come across Niladri Kumar who plays both regular and electric sitar? here he is on electric sitar- it's a bit over the top, like steve vai on sitar-

Wow... super player--- however if you notice he does not pull the string even once, not even any tiny hint of a gamak... but the clip is short, too short to judge.

otherwise, is it quite amazing :-)
