A Shehata Oud via Nile Shop

Greetings,

Thanks to this forum and Yehia at Nile Shop, I was able to order an oud from Mourice Shehata. The bowl is padouk while the last stave, pick guard, and the fingerboard are made of ebony. Attached is a picture of the oud.

The next step is learning how to play it well so if anyone knows an oud instructor in San Francisco who can teach the arabic style, I would appreciate any leads.

Once again, thanks to all the contributors to this forum--the information here was essential throughout the process of designing this oud.

Cheers,
Jose

Hey Jose,

Congratulations on the new oud. It looks really nice. Looks like the roses are also made of ebony, or did he just stain them? If you have some pictures of the back and closeups of the roses, I'd like to see them. Either way, I'm glad it worked out for you.

As far as oud teachers go in your area, try contacting either Hank Levin (hank@musicaravan.com) or John Erlich (johnerlich@hotmail.com).

Good luck,
Mike

Hi Mike,

The roses are made of stained palisander. I initially didn't specify what wood to use for very dark rosettes, so that was the solution. If I get another oud though, I would ask for ebony in the first place!

Here's a picture of the roses, but I'll try to take bigger pictures at home, especially of the back.

Hey Jose,

Thanks for the picture. I really like the look of the dark roses. One of my ouds has them, and it actually looks like stained wood too. I don't think it makes that big of a difference what wood was used though. Either way, congratulations again. Looking forward to seeing some bigger and better pictures.

Take care,
Mike

I actually ended up taking bigger pictures of this oud but didn't post them. Well, I figure its never too late! I've had this oud for about half a year now and I'm very happy with it.

First I felt arrogant asking for the customizations especially because I'm an oud newbie, but I wanted my first oud to be something unique that I'd want to keep for a while. I really appreciate what Maurice did--the oud is a Shehata in look and sound, but he also made it unique at the same time.
