Hey, Nice! I like the way you explore the whole neck, with plenty of risha variety and many tonal colors.:applause:

Thank you Sazi :) I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Luttgutt.. Thank you as well :)

I'm using the Zoom H4n recorder.. placed nearly 1m away from the sound hole - in my bedroom, no effects. I will try different placements of the recorder to check which distance and position is the best for recording.. as I think that this one is not optimal yet.

I see, try to place the recorder approx. 20cm from the bridge (a little to the write for the bridge even).
Just a suggestion : )

I said before, and I say it again: A dream oud! Mabrouk!

p.s. what is the string length?

I think 20cm is very close. The proximity effect will probably develop at such distance - it's just a guess. I think I should start at 30cm and increase.. but will try closer.. no one knows. Thank you anyway!

As for the oud.. the string length is 60cm.

Wow, what a timbre! Is this like the Ghadban that was on e-bay?

Frankly, the proximity effect of a dynamic mic is what you want if you want to make it sound good and deep. Recording isn't ever "faithful", it's just a matter of what you want it to be, vs. what happens by chance. If the objective is to present an oud for evaluation, you want to record some room sound so our brains can compensate, but I beg to differ with people who talk about "objective recordings". Is a photograph ever truly representative of reality? Doesn't the camera, lens, lighting, angle etc. define the result?

Actually, there SHOULD be a standard setup defined to record an instrument for evaluation purposes, say a specific microphone, at a specific distance, position, in a specific type room, etc. But it hasn't happened yet.

No Fernand. This is another Ghadban oud. A newly custom one I ordered a while ago and received this week. You can see it here:

http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=9303#pid617...

And yes you're right. A recording is never objective. You may want to have a deep and bassy sound, and I do want it. A very close mic will accentuate the bass notes, right, but it will also make the sound too dry and cancel out the natural echo of the instrument and the room. This is why I will try different placements to have a compromise I like.

Man! what the hell where you talking about not being able to do taqasim, that was great.
Sounds nice, nice, nice but you are right the strings are too low tension.

Beautiful "oud machine"!

If you have two mics, you can simply put one very close and one further out, and record in "stereo", that usually sounds good, best o' both worlds.

Bien joué Reda!

Beautiful sound and nice playing.
Sure that N. Ghadban is one of the best oudmakers....

Nice. For some reason the Samai sounds totally different in C versus D; D has a more "late night" feel where as C is more an early evening sound.
