Help with a rhythm?

Can anyone please tell me what is the name of the rhythm in "Ya Rayeh"?

Thanks, there are obviously two drums playing together on the Ya Rayeh recording, it sounds to me as though they might be playing the two rhythms together, one doing Ayyoub, and the other doing Karachi, as there is a dum on the first beat.

Does that sound right to you?

But... there is also a dum on the second beat... but not in those two rhythms:shrug:

The riqq zills are heard on the Teks. The piece has a very obvious Karachi rhythm. The Doum you hear is on the 2+ beat of the Karachi. Sometimes, the -k on the 1+ beat is played very syncopated, more like ---k for a bigger 'tripping' effect.

If it were the Ayub rhythm, the 2 Doums will result in a much heavier, squared-off feel, and the piece would need to be played faster to retain the light, danceable character.

PS: The Ayub is one of those rhythms with a wide range of qualities and names depending on the speed it is played - from manic to dopey trance....but that's another topic....

I would ask a question indirectly related to this post. I 'd like to buy a mandole ( mandole kabyle ) like the one played by Hakim Hamadouche with Taha's band. I suppose the mandole is from a maker living in Kabylie.....not easy to find for me!

Thanks for that link Francis, it's handy watching the different drummers to see/hear how the different patterns fit together.

Sorry I can't help you with the Mandole, maybe it's a good excuse for a holiday to morocco?
