Copper vs. Silver Oud Strings

Zulu - 9-14-2010 at 09:37 AM

I've seen various oud srings that have an appearence to be either copper plated or silver/nickel plated.
Are ther any differences, pros/cons, playability, durability?

The usual is silver plated copper winding over nylon filaments. Silver is a bit more resistant to oxidation theoretically. It happens that the plain copper ones are usually cheaply made and for reasons having nothing to do with lack of silver plating suffer from other problems, like poor intonation and poor durability.

Hi,

I tried lastly the Savarez copper wound (not silver plated) and like very much their warm sound...Installed 6 months ago and still ok. According to the manufacturer, they have a warmer sound than the silver platted, more suited to go along with guts.

To find by myself the differences between silver plated and pure copper, I would need to try the same brand, same gauges with silver. Variations between brands are probably greater than this particular aspect !

Trying different kind of strings is always interesting ! In any case, the best is to try various kinds on your oud, as different instruments react differently...
