I'm curious. I tend to use cable ties which are pretty narrow, somewhere around 1/5 inch on average.

I mostly use the ones introduced by Jameel. They are available thru Oudstrings.com:

I also like horn risha's. The ones I have tend to be a bit narrower, but they feel OK.
The Mezrite ones are "dangerous" for beginners 
. They tend to make the oud
louder. They are about 1 cm wide too.

Interestingly enough, horn risha's are very hard to find nowadays. However, I heard all kinds of good comments about John Vergara's risha's.

I don't like the soft Turkish risha's or any soft ones.
If you talk to professionals like Marina or Dr. Mamdouh, they will tell you otherwise.
