Trio Joubran

samzayed - 9-16-2005 at 11:08 PM

Guys,

Tonight I saw one of most amazing oud concerts I've ever seen. It was the "Trio Joubran" lead by Sameer Joubran, with his 2 younger brothers.

I'm sure some of you have heard the cd's, but the show had 100x the magnitude. It was amazing how they played together. I can't even articulate what I saw tonight (I'm so tired), but tomorrow maybe I'll try to explain how they sounded.

Here's info on their tour:

Fortunately for me, they are coming around again next Tuesday and giving a workshop at the U of Chicago. I'll be there for sure.

Can't wait to hear about them Sam. I wish they were coming to the West Coast...Oh well...your description is going to have to do.
Take care,
Mike

Hey Sam,

Thanks for the "heads up" on these guys. I hadn't heard of them, but thanks to you I have now downloaded their album "Tamaas" from Calabash.

It is spectactularly beautiful music. One of the tracks was recorded live at Ramallah and they even get a great oud sound live. I guess it helps to have a dad who is an oudmaker.

Does anybody here have an oud made by the father Hatem Jubran (Joubran)?

Regards,

Greg

Actually, all their ouds are made by the second brother, Wissam. He studied at some prestigous violin making school in Italy. But yes, I agree, they have an amzing oud sound

HI, about 6 or 7 years ago there was a documentary called "In the Line of Fire" in which a large part showed briefly the father Hatem building an oud in his shop in Nazareth for the lute player host wannabe oud player of the program. Also had Samir presenting and teaching his talent to the lute player. I don't think Samir was very well known outside of Palestine. I am sure back then the ouds played by Samir were built by the father and I was back then taken with the talent of the father and son. BTW, as I recall, Nazareth had quite a few oud makers but most of them went into furniture making because of the lack of sales.

Sam, were you allowed to take in a video camera? Because I will probably be attending the show in Toronto. Because I wouldnt mind sharing the vid with the forrum.
Thank you
SAmir

Samir, for this particular venue, I doubt they would have let me. On tuesday, they are performing at the University of Chicago. I think if I wanted to record it, I would have to get permission from the artists. It really depends on the venue, and if the artist minds.

I think thats great you are going to them. Honestly, seeing what they did, broadend the way I look at oud. It was really an amazing performance, I can't really explain it in a short paragraph. Go, you won't be disappointed.

Is this the Trio's Dad?

Hey guys,

Here's an old article from Al Ahram Newspaper. I was just wondering is this the Trio's father?

No, actually that is Elias Joubran of a different village (Rameh), no relation. Both his daughter, Kamilya, and son, Khalid are prominent Palestinian musicians. They formed a group called Sabrine. Kamilya's web site is http://www.kamilyajubran.com/

Sameer Joubran and his brothers are friends with them, but no relation.

Actually, Elias Joubran made Issa Boulos' oud, the one that Jameel restored.

Hi,
I really love Trio Joubran. They are amazing and really nice boys.
I discovered their music one year ago and had the opportunity to see them 5 or 6 times in France.
You can see videos and hear their music on this site :
