I have heard of Turkish oud method books by Mutlu Torun and Serif Muhiddin Targan. Is there still another one by Gulcin Yahya, or has she written only
oud exercise book and not a complete method? Which one of these would be useful for a non-Turkish-reading beginner? Reading music is no problem for
me, so I would like to have sheet music exercises, information about ornamentation, pictures etc.
I have also seen a set of four VCDs advertised at eBay. The producer company is called Servet, but I think I have seen slightly different covers. Are
there different sets, or are these one and the same method? The first one is available in English and I have that one, the others are only in Turkish.
The first one is really basic and most of it teaches one to understand music notation, but there are some makam examples (scale and how it is played
on oud, and one simple example for each makam, mainly songs). Are the more advanced parts 2-4 for any use?
Thanks,
Arto

hi arto
first of all there is only one oud VCD in english and the other 4 VCD is in turkish which i have all but they are not helpfull at all at leaste for me
anyways
and the books are all in turkish so i do not know how helpfull would that be for cos i have no idea if u can read and speak turkish
if you do not know turkish it would be kind pointless for you to get those book even if you can read music cos you would not be able to understand
explanations of turkish music and all that stuff such as makams and so on.
one last advice if you can find a teacher go and learn from him/her do not vaste any of your money on learning books or VCDs a teacher is more
helpfull then any of those things.

Thanks for in formation, friends! I sincerely believe that finding a teacher would be the best choice, but unfortunately that would be quite challenge
where I live. Not much Turkish or Arabic classical music scene in Finland, sorry to say. So I´m trying to get information where I can.
So, I´d still be happy to know, if someone would share his/her opinions about oud methods by Targan, Torun and/or Yahya and if some of them could be
useful. I read music but I don´t read Turkish.
The summer university nearby is offering a short beginner´s course in Turkish. Maybe I should go there...
