Difference between 12 string and 11 string oud

schwingrocker - 12-27-2007 at 10:04 AM

What is the difference between a 12 string and an 11 string oud? Is there just an extra string added to the bass string? Can you play without the 12th string? Is it more common to hear an 11 string or a 12 string oud? Does this look like a good oud to you guys http://www.instrumentalsavings.com/Egyptian-Mosaic-Oud-with-Hard-Ca... ?

A 12 string oud just has an extra bass string. 11 string ouds are more common, in my opinion.

None of the ouds I've bought over the years has had the extra bass string, even though a lot of them have 12 pegs.

So you could easily take the 12th string off if you didn't care for it?

HI rocker, I agree with meursault and you can choose to apply his advices depending on ur style of playing and the sound you like. If you want to be technical and if u prefer the treble sound, you can live without the single bass string. However, if you want to play warm bassy takasseems with a warm tone and sustain, u better keep the bass string. The bass string, even when not used, gives a rich resonance for the instrument, for instance, its simpathetic vibration helps a lot the nawa string (g) to sound fuller. Without it, the g string could give a poorer sound.

There is no optimal solution, the ultimate judge is your ear and your mood.

Cheers!
