Oud Lesson

LeeVaris - 4-9-2004 at 08:21 AM

I've posted some photos from a recent oud lesson that might be of interest:

The gentleman in the black shirt is Wa'el Kakish, my teacher. I can't remember the names of the other "guests"... they were checking out some beginner instruments for sale. The last two pictures show the right hand position.

Wa'el's risha technique is still a little bit of a mystery to me - I hold the risha somewhat differently, though I've given up on Marcel Kalifé's method of holding the risha with the end coming out between the ring and little fingers. It seems that everyone has a different technique and it may depend a lot on the type of risha, stiffness, etc...

Lee, I had no idea that you were being taught by Wael! The number of people now is just growing considerably, and I'm so glad to hear that. Wael's risha technique is amazing, in my opinion. He feels the note every single time he hits the string, whether he's going fast or not. Wael has had quite an impact on me as well. Is this down at Cal Poly or what?

The Barnsdle Art Park is beautiful. Kan Zaman had a concert there a few months ago, and it was a very nice environment. Have you been to Kan Zaman's concerts before?

Hey guys...

I don't give a report on all of my lessons! I've had 4 lessons so far... much to learn. Right now I'm working on something called "Bint Al Shalabiya".

Ghassan... are you offering to teach me – I'd love it! I think TP21's idea of a get together is a good one. Look me up when you get to Hollywood!
