Neck-Body Angle

Sherko Dakouri - 6-19-2008 at 11:35 AM

Hello everybody!

I have a problem with my new oud that I wish you would tell me how to solve. I have a very good Turkish oud with a beautiful and quite loud sound. The only problem is that the angle between the neck and the body is not really straight, and therefore some strings buzz. Could you tell me how I can straighten it? Do I have to go to a profesional luthier? Thanks.

Hello Sherko,

There was an interesting thread not too long ago about neck-body angle. You can follow it at the following link.
I also recall a thread about string buzz on this forum but can not find it right now. If I find it I'll post the link.

Hi Sherko, can you possibly post a close up photo of the situation? Depending on where you live there are some good oud people out you can take your oud to if it needs any work done or for an on the spot assesment. Are you sure the problem is with the neck- body angle, and not be a question of maybe raising the action of the strings either at the nut or the bridge end?

Hi MatthewW

If it's necessary to take it to some professional, then it's Ok. I'm going to Syria in 2 weeks and I'll be able to fix it there. But if the bridge is low, what can be done? The bridge is fixed and we don't have such bridges in Syria..

Sherko,
If you have a fixed bridge oud it doesn't become to short over night. Obviously it never changes height.

If the sound and strings used to be fine when you got it.
Then the neck warped which is something very normal that needs to be fixed.
have fun in Souria

Sherko, if you go to Syria, I would advice you to go to Mr. Ibrahim Sukkar in Aleppo, he ceratinly can fix the problem for you. Check http://www.oudsukar.com
