Interesting String Set

I got an Oud made by Khidor Mostafa Daghir on Mohamed Ali street in Cairo, as was kindly identified by a forum member.

After some repairs I did myself (see unorthodox oud repair I & II) I put a set of Pyramid Professional Arabic 11 Strings set onto it - that was the set I just happened to have at home.

The Oud was unfamiliar to me - he (she?) much is bigger than my Fathi Amin Oud, so I had to experiment a bit with the pitch - and found out that b-flat instead of c was the most resonant tuning.

The wound Pyramids were doing quite a nice job - I actually came to like them, they are full and deep sounding strings. Not at all convincing are the nylon pairs of cc and gg.

I was trying to come up with a nice replacement for them and - as I coudn' get Aquila Strings in my town I bought Augustin Blue e and b guitar strings (a pair each).

They seem to fit quite well into the Pyramid wound set and alltogether it seems to be a reasonably priced and very good sounding set after the replacement.

Hope that inspires you to do some experimentation ... best wishes

Hi there, I wanted to let you know that meanwhile I got e1 and b2 Augustin Imperials (a pair each) and that they seem to do the job even better than the 'Blues' (!).

I measured the tension (I will tell you how in a separate contribution) and they are not tighter than the 'Blues' but they sound kind of more together and brighter - don't know how but that's what I hear.

Anyway. give it a try, you might be quite content...

best wishes
:)
