Pegbox buzz and string order

oud-dude - 11-11-2008 at 02:48 PM

Hi, friends... I just strung up an oud I bought with new Pyramid strings. I am getting a little bit of string buzz, and it seems to be coming from the peg box. I strung the oud per instructions and diagrams at Oud Cafe, but now I am wondering if perhaps I should have strung it in a particular order to minimize string-to-string buzz in the pegbox. I installed the strings from highest in pitch to lowest. I am new at this, so bare with me if I am ignorant of some different order in which to put the strings on that keeps the crossing strings from vibrating on each other. I thought about sticking some little pieces of felt between crossing strings, but thought I'd ask your advice first. Any help appreciated!

Cheers... Peter (Virginia, USA)

hi Peter
I string the pegbox from the nearest peg to the nut to the farthest peg
so in the diagram of arabic pegbox in oudcafe you should have this sequence:
g1-c1-g2-c2-d1-A1-d2-A2-F1-F2-C

Hi guys,

I've found that when I get pegbox string buzzing, the culprit is usually the sixth string or fifth strings vibrating on the side of the pegbox, or on each other.

Try and make sure that they are not touching each other, and touch the side of the pegbox as little as possible.

That usually takes care of it for me. :)

Me too... the annoying string buzz was solved by making sure the strings aren't touching in the pegbox when installing the string.... or restringing the instrument as was the case with me...

Yes indeed i've used thy faruk turunz way as shown in thy above link .....no buzzing no moore ...it may be difficult to see but using that méthod the strings do not touch each other at all résaulting in no buzzing even in power play..so!:applause:still greatfull to Mr tur:airguitar:unz!Don!

Ah, thanks, friends... lots of good info from everyone. I will try restringing with some of this in mind, and hopefully I can get the strings away from each other by doing so. I sure appreciate your input.

Thanks... Peter
