Thomastik oud string set medium

rojaros - 11-17-2008 at 12:58 PM

Hello everybody, does anybody have any experience with a oud string set by dr. tomastik? For what kind of oud and which tuning?

I've got a set of 5 pairs of strings and it says on all of the 'medium'

#310 Medium I Synthetic 2 Strings (white sleeve)
#311 Medium II Synthetic 2 Strings (white sleeve)
#312 Medium 3rd plain 1 String (green-white old fashioned sleeve)
#313 Medium IV Synthetic Core Silver (?) wound 2 Strings (white sleeve)
#314 Medium V Synthetic Core Silver (?) wound 2 strings (white sleeve)

A bit strange combination with this very thic plain nylon single third string??

- Are the wound one really silver or just silver coated?
- arabic or turkish oud and which tuning?

I wrote to Thomastik but no answer yet

Thanks folks

best wishes
Robert

Hello Robert,

Thomastic has a short information policy. Once I did the same as you but had the luck tu receive an answer about the strings. The result could be find in my PDF file about the different aoud strings from the various producers. This file can be downloaded from my website. This file contais additionally a lot of own sets for the aoud I composed during the past. Have a look into.

But comming back to your question: The Thomastik set has the following data:

Thomastik Infeld http://www.thomastik-infeld.com
scale length: 62 cm
note | item No | string | Diam. in mm | Tension Newton | Tension lbs
cc | 310 | Plain nyl .66 | 5,5(37) | 12,12
gg | 311 | Plain nyl .85 | 6(36) | 13,22
dd | 312 | Plain nyl 1.05 | 4,5(31) | 9,9
dd | 317 | wound 0.59 | 40 | 8,8
AA | 313 | wound .725 | 33 | 7,27
G (F) | 314 | wound .82 | 40 (39) | 8,8
F | CR43 | wound

Set TH-315 1st - 3rd plain strings
Set TH-315A 3rd wound

The two values in the tension column means: first value is by Thomastic, 2nd value is my calculation.

I just hade a phone with Thomastic to take the information about the three gauges of this set. The above given tensions are from the medium set. The light set has 15% less tension and the heavy set has 15% more.

Hope that helps you all.

If you need these strings, you can get it through my shop. The medium set I will always have on stock.

Best regards

Matthias

Hi Matthias,
thanks for fast response and the valuable information.

two more questions:

1. is that normal that the third plain nylon (d) comes single as with my set?

2. are the wound strings silver or silver coated?

I got this set from the USA from my brother as a gift and I haven't used them yet, because I even didn't new what oud and what tuning they are for. I'll give them a try when I change strings.

best wishes

Robert

Hello Robert,

Thomastik gives the following informations about their aoud strings:

"The treble strings are plain and are manufactured from specially treated synthetic material. The low strings have a multi-strand synthetic core and are wound with finest copper-silver wire. The third string can be supplied either plain or wound. The string's undamped resonance is long and rich. Its strong higher partials give the player advantages in all registers. The overall sound is well balanced and smooth, and the strings are durable, having proven their consistency in every musical situation. We supply aoud strings in pairs. Available in light - medium - high tension"

Hi Matthias- do you know if Thomastik do oud strings for a 59 cm scale oud, tuned to (low to high) C,ff,aa,dd,gg,cc,ff?
What other string sets would you recommend for this 59 cm scale?
cheers, MW

Hello Robert,

Thomastik offers only this single set for arabic tuning ( cc, gg, dd, AA, GG, F). And as you can see the d is double, so may be your brother made an experiment with the missing string?

Concerning a set for a 59 scale have a look into my file about various aoud stringings, that you can download from my website:
http://www.music-strings.de//PHC_Downloadcenter/category.php?id=2 --> Aoud Besaitungen // Aoud string sets

if there is no fitting set, I can calculate one.
