Would any members who have used a plain 'd' course (nial gut, nylon or PVF) please share their findings?. Many Thanks in advance, Charlie.SamirCanada - 12-16-2008 at 12:23 PM
I have used an Aquila Nylgut turkish gg' course on an Arabic oud tuned as a dd' course.
it was really nice, it gave a more rounded smoother sound. I would say less powerfull but more "Hannan" sorry dont know the word in english...
anyhow, its worth giving it a try. But that was on a very responsive shehata oud. I dont know how it would do with a sukar oud. they have much thicker
soundboards and I know from experiance they like the "heavier" set gauge. But you never know as each instrument is different.
If you decide to try it let us know how it turns out charlie oud - 12-16-2008 at 12:31 PM
Thankyou Samir, I'll post my findings, do you know what gauge string (nylgut) I would require to go with the Aquilla Turkish(tuned to Arabic) set I
have already fitted?. CSamirCanada - 12-16-2008 at 12:45 PM
I dont know much about guages.
its the Aquila turkish set Jameel sells on his website.
I am pretty sure it is the plain nylgut string that is intended for aa tuning in the turkish set.Masel - 12-31-2008 at 07:39 PM
try it i used to play like that for a long time, and now i'm considering going back to it. i dont know how to describe the sound. i think samir was
right with hannan (which i imagine is identical to the hebrew word hannun). you could say hannun means modest and pious, but pious has a negative
connotation for me so i don't know...Melbourne - 1-1-2009 at 12:35 AM
Hi Samir - Happy New Year
Just a question about your string set - is it simply the turkish set off Jameel's website? that has this plain dd - or does one need to order a custom
set and specifically ask for the dd. Another question - what is the vibrating string lenght on the oud your putting these strings on?. Thanks!

Hello, I think Matthias Wagner (member of this forum) can give you advice on almost any string issue, especially how to calculate gauges.

Hi Charlie,
Matthias is super helpful, years ago, Vic Fernandez and oud brother of mine ordered several sets of Pyramid stings of various type and guages....and
there were several rounds of returns, etc...and everything went very smoothly. Good Luck.

Hello Charlie,
from Aquila I have some plain and polished Nylgut strings on stock. These are the diameters: 88 / 95 / 100 / 104
These can be ordered through my shop. These strings have the following item numbers:
AQOA TD-088 | AQOA TD-095 | AQOA TD-100 | AQOA TD-104 |
The 104 and the 100 would be a good choice.
Furthermore, through my shop nearly all aoud strings may be purchased. Have a look there.
Regards

Thanks Matthias, I recieved the plain 'd' from you. I chose a light gauge as I prefer Turkish tuned to Arabic. Im enjoying the plain 'd' but am still
undecided. Wound or plain?, I'll know in time. Charliecharlie oud - 3-15-2009 at 05:56 PM
Just to round off this thread. Its been a while now since I went back to a wound 'd'. The plain 'd' has some qualities but eventually I found myself
missing the wound string. Mainly because the wound 'd' relates more in tone to a bass sound, which for me is the sound I like in an oud, I'm not as
keen on the higher registers. Worth a try though and can understand how the plain 'd' works for some. C
