Ear training

Hello All
I have met several people in addition to many in this forum who admirbly became accomplished oud players by learning to play by ear and never learned to read music.

My question is does anybody have any exercises that help to train one's ears to recognise notes and maqamat?

Also, there are many software/ online sites that helps ear training but mainly focused on piano and western music theory. Does anybody know of one that focuses on oud ear training?

Hi Joklany and Marina

My Bansuri teacher has me singing the sargam (notes) on a tuner to get the notes right when playing (yes yes yes I do get complaints from my son, but hey what the heck :)))

I guess that would be a good place to start for any fretless instrument, I actually never needed it for guitar.

It seems to be a long standing Indian tradition.

It could be that after 40 yrs of playing in rock bands, but as a beginner, I'm having problems distinguishing quarter tones. One thing that helps is that I downloaded a free widget tuner (TapNTune - its also a metronome!) and was able to find just the right places to put the fingers more accurately than I felt confident enough to do by ear alone. Unfortunately, there are no other oud players in my city.

Yup i used that technique too together with oud tutor ... it really helps.
