Pyramid Lute Strings for Oud

bpcNORD - 9-1-2009 at 03:08 PM

I bought a set of Pyramid Lute strings made for the oud
from Ramazan Calay, an oud maker in Istanbul. They sound really great but different. I emailed Pyramid for more info but
they wanted info from the packaging that was unfortunately
discarded. Does anyone have an opinion on these strings and where can I buy more? (I live in New York City.)
I also found out that when I tried to tune my C# to E,
the string broke.

Dear bcp,

It's kind of dangerous for you to go tuning bass strings made for F# C#(B e a d) up to E !! You're lucky the string gave out before your oud did ! The guages of the bass strings are made for this tuning, so if you want to move to E A B e a d, then you'll need to get some different guages for your bass strings.

I don't have his phone number with me right now, but you should get in touch with Haig Manukian, he's in New York City too, and is great with strings. He doesn't sell Pyramid, he sells custom guaged D'Addario strings, but he should be able to help you out. You could try emailing Ramazan to find out the info on the set as well. When I get the number, I'll send you a PM.

Regards..Paul

Also Matthias on the forum here can help you pick out a custom Pyramid Lute set for your oud, based on the scale length and tuning you'll use, and your preferred amount of tension.

You might also want to check out the Pyramid string tension charts that I posted on the 'Ouds.Ouds.Ouds' forum. See "Pyramid String Tension Charts" posted on 9-7-2006.

These will give you a better idea about the relationship of tension, length and pitch range for each type of lute string made by Pyramid.

Thanks for all the help. I will never retune a C#,F#,b,e,a,d
tuning to E,A,bead !! I will study the Pyramid String
gauge chart (when I find it) and I will email the Boston contact. It looks like I'll have to use another oud to explore
the E,A,b,e,a,d sound with the resonating sympathetic strings.
