Broken head and neck, advice needed.
My new oud arrived today with a broken head
The neck is also broken through.
Could any makers offer any advice on how to go about repairing it?
(sending it anywhere is not an option.)
Thanks.

Dude this looks pretty painfull...you need to send a note to Dr. Oud -- from my point of view, you might need a new neck...and fingerboard since
there's so much damage...but I'm just an oud user, not an oud builder. Really a drag too, since it looks like a pretty nice oud.
Regards,
Paul

Repairs
This looks repairable to me. I've had worse and fixed them. Not necessarily professionally.
Where are you located ?

Thanks Paul, yeah, it feels pretty painful too! And it is otherwise a beautiful instrument.
Hi Spyros, I do think it's repairable also, as there are no bits missing, no glue joints broke, only the wood, so I'm just waiting to find out what
glue was used.
My main concern is if it would be strong enough, I've glued heads back on but never where the neck is broken right through.
Where am I? Just on the edge of the planet (some might say off it)... Australia, though I'm seriously wondering why!

Do you mind telling us...
Who made the oud?
Who sold it to you; did the oud maker sell it to you direct or did you buy it from a retailer or private party?
How was it shipped?
How was it packed?
Is there any insurance that will pay for the damages?
I almost fell out of my chair when I saw this picture!

G'day Zulu, (nice artwork by the way).
It's all ok there as it was insured, plus the maker, who I consider a friend and a good man, immediately offered to refund my money in full, shipping
was the only thing we could afford which was a 10 day postal journey, definitely not recommended, in a hard case in a box.
I really don't give a toss about the money, the thing is, I have seen and heard this oud in action and now I've held it even though I couldn't play
it, there's no way I'm letting it go! Light and resonant, comfortable, and it is a work of art to look at.
I'll do a proper post with info, pic's and video link soon...ish.

Hi Sazi,
Sorry for the predicament, I am sure a violin/ guitar maker can fix it.
Is it possible to post more pics of this oud, I love the bowl wood combiation/ the face will be awesome am sure. Can you tell us who made it?
Good luck my friend with my best wishes for a speedey recovery
Best Regards
Awad

I would try to epoxy it back together or use a high bloom strength hide glue.
It seems like a clean enough break. You dont loose anything by trying that. As the other option is to make a new neck... there is no 2 ways about it
imo.
I know the maker ( its easy to tell without asking) but regardless, I dont think we can blame him at all so might as well leave it out of the story.
Sometimes there are issues with grain direction and the very rough handling of freight is a reality we all have to deal with.
good thing you are insured and you wont loose to much on it.

I'm getting some good hide glue tomorrow.
I agree, and if it doesn't hold...
too true! Being out near the edge of the galaxy I've always had to do my own repairs and modifications, somehow I bluff my way through it with a lot
of thinking and focus.
I plan on making my own oud in the future anyway, either way I need to learn how to make a neck so I guess it's all good.
