Daniel Mari strings

Bonjour,

I finished some work on my old&cheap Kalifah oud.
Now it's time to glue the new rosettes ans by the way to set new strings.
I remember some threads here about Daniel Mari strings, but I didn't find any indication about the pression they give on the neck and the table.
I usually set this oud ( 62 cm stringlength ) with Labella strings ( OU 80 ), tuned ( bass to treble )C GG AA DD gg cc. The action is 3mm at the place the neck join the table, and I don't want more ( of course!).
Will Daniel Mari strings give the same or exerce more power?
Sure some experienced player can help me here!

Francis

Daniel Mari strings are very similar to the LaBella OU80. Mari is part of the family that started LaBella strings. On an Arabic oud/Arabic tuning, the tension is medium to low depending on string length. The tension should be almost identical to what you have with LaBella.
The newer OU80 set has rectified (polished) nylon courses, while Mari has plain nylon.
The Mari are good strings and inexpensive. I will be carrying them soon at oudstrings.com, I'm just waiting on a shipment.

If you tune the 5th course to GG, you are pulling a bit hard, but it's the same on LaBella or Mari.

Thanks Brian and Fernand.
Brian:I didn't know that Mari and labella strings were closed to a family, I can change without any doubt now.
Fernand: I like the 5th course in G, sound strong as a second bass.I like to play an oud with this tuning and another with "modern" high tuning:FF AA DD gg cc ff.

Thanks again,

Francis.

PS: Brian, what about the book concerning transcriptions from Ryiad Al Sunbati? Project stiil alive?

You're welcome, Francis.
The GG is a bit high tension on a long scale oud like 62cm, but still within the normal tension range.

Re: the Sounbati transcriptions, I've unfortunately had to shelve it for the time being. Kareem Roustom has transcribed all the pieces and it's available as a download from an academic publishing service. I don't recall the details, but if you search for it, it should turn up.

From what I understand, Mari has some unofficial sets out there with higher tensions than before. Anyone hear about this?
