Historical resources re Oud used in healing body

Hello everyone,

I have read and heard some things about the Oud being used in the past in healing the body, and how the strings of the Oud are connected to different organs in the body.

I want to conduct some research on this subject and I was wondering if anyone knew some sources off the top of their heads. I'm looking for something a bit deeper than the obvious meditative and relaxing quality of the Oud.

You might try the fifth epistle on music of the Ikhwan al-Safa. Best to read the surviving copies but there are some modern critical publications that may be of interest:
1) "Epistles of the Bretheren of Purity on Music - an Arabic critical edition", Owen Wright, Oxford University Press, 2010 (English and Arabic text).
2)"The Epistles on the Music of the Ikhwan al-Safa", Prof. Amnon Shiloah, Tel Aviv University, 1978 (published versions in French, English and Hebrew).
3) "The Structure of the Arabian and Persian Lute in the Middle Ages", G.H. Farmer, Civic Press Glasgow, 1939 (English text)

According to Farmer there are also references that may be of relevance in Kitab kashf al-humum (15th C) - connecting the number of veins in a man's body to the strings and notes of an oud etc.

Good luck

I have not had time to explore this site in depth but it is a wonderful free on-line resource covering seemingly all subject matter under the sun, in all languages. You might find something of relevance here.
