Counting Sama'i Thaqil

I found a way for myself to keep track of the beats of Sama'i Thaqil rhythm by counting the grooves on one finger. I thought this might help some people keep track of the beats after they find beat 1 in piece they are listening to... etc.

I know Indian musicians have their own way of counting rhythm on fingers. I wonder if anyone is familiar with this and can shed some light on how this can be used to count any particular rhythm?

Are there any distinctly Arab/Turkish devices or counting methods besides simply saying the numbers of beats such as the English...

one-e-and-a-two-e-and-a etc

I find when composing a melody, counting on my finger helps me keep track of the beat I am on allowing me to write it out. I hope it will help someone out there too.

On a related note, the following album is all in 10/8, for those interested. Very decent Ottoman stuff.
