Pegs are hard to turn
Hello
The pegs of an oud I got borrowed are too hard to turn.
I'm using pegdope, just put them on all the pegs, but it is still hard to tune.
What do I have to do? Take them off and add even more peg dope?
Thanks!

I'm not a big fan of peg dope- a classical violin player once told me he uses a good graphite pencil, and simply draws a few lines on the peg shaft
where it is inserted into the pegbox. I tried it and it works very nicely, but don't overdo it or you may end up with the reverse problem of slipping
pegs.

Its the humidity most likely. In summer it's usually higher and makes the wood swell.
Fix it as Mathew said.

Hello,
a good product for pegs is this.
http://music-strings.de/navi.php?a=13979&lang=eng&
For decades I worked with standart soap and chalk but then I shifted to this, as it workes excellent and is much more easyer to use.
But basicly it is necessary that the pegs are worked out properly. Often on cheep instruments the pegs are installed bad, made out of too soft wood.
Even on better instruments I often have to make corrections. The pegs must fit well into the holes. If this is not the case, any peg soap will not
help.
Best regards
Matthias

When I initially bought my turkish oud, the pegs were almost seized solid.
They're fairly cheap olive wood pegs, which seem to be very prone to humidity and temperature changes.
The oud had been sat in a fairly humid room in the shop for some time which while it was fine for the guitars, didn't really help the oud at all.
Once I had it stood in a dryer and slightly warmer room for a few hours, the pegs pretty much freed up and have been perfectly usable ever since.
If you do remove the pegs to apply pencil to them, it might be worth restringing it at the same time rather than stress older strings.
