Saving Videos from YouTube
There is quite a bit of useful, informative stuff being posted on YouTube. The problem for me is that - with only a dial up connection - even brief
video clip downloads take a long time to complete so I must be very selective about what I want to view. I was, therefore, looking for an easy way to
save video clips of interest to my PC for study at leisure. This is how I was able to download and save video clips - using freeware programs.
The 'problem' is two fold - first to be able to download the video clip and then to be able to view the files.
For downloading I used "DownloadHelper" which is a 'plug-in' on Firefox (Tools/AddOns/Get Extensions - search DownloadHelper). This program sits in
the browser toolbar and auto detects files for selection and downloading (video and picture gallery files) to your PC.
The second part of the 'problem' is to be able to play back the video files once downloaded. The files are in .flv format (Flash Video) and cannot,
therefore be read in Windows Media Player and the like. The solution is to either instal an FLV player or convert the FLV files to AVI (or MPEG) so
that they can be played back in WM. I chose the latter course of action having found a good freeware program - "Pazera Free FLV to AVI" at http://www.flvtoavien.glt.pl
This program is very easy to use with auto settings and also has a lot of advanced settings in video options, audio settings, resolution, cropping
etc. The Pazera site also has other freeware for downloading FLV.
This may be of some interest to other researchers who do not have a high speed Internet connection.

Today I needed to examine a downloaded video clip in more detail by viewing still shots. I could not do this for files that I had converted from .flv
format to AVI so I used an flv viewer that had a screen capture facility instead.
The software that I used was FLVPlayer4Free which is a free download and a nice, comprehensive and easy to use program.
