help on a makam

Hello
I am working by hear on this piece of Naseer Shamma:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG06pqNZ_28
The piece is in the second half of the record.

Can someone give the name of this makam, with its notes. I am not sure to play it well on quarter notes and on modulations he is making on it.

Thank you for your help
Regards

suz,
this a what we call, hijaaz kar kurd on C.
Do, Do#, Mi (natural), Fa, sol, Lab, Si (natural), Do. In the middle of the piece nasser made a siga on Do (natural do), mi (half bemol), Fa (halfbemol), not so common and difficult to play

here is the same makam but played on G (I guess, or F)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUExVpBgeTY&feature=related
The song is "esaal roohak" for omm kathuum (music for mhammad el mouji)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iFIBbsdH10
a so common modulation on this scale is to play the rast on the 4th similar to the modulation in that video for omm kalthum. Eg. playing the hijaz kar on Do, you can do a Rast (or nahawand or ajam) on Fa.
hope this is helpfull and not confusing

Hi Katakofka

I'm not really qualified to comment, but I thought I heard bayati shuri on Do at the beginning, with tinges of huzam (on La half flat), before it settled into hijaz kar kurd. Suz, I wouldn't take this from me - wait for Katakofka or someone else to comment. Please do correct me - that's how I learn.

ur totally right dave, but suz was asking about the second part of the video, about the music played by Nasser, not the taksimi. This is what I understood.

Ah yes, it always pays to read the post first. And that should have been huzam on mi half flat, anyway. :)

yep, huzam on Mi Half. Not easy to get what is he playing from the first glance since he has no AA strings. He tunes F, CC, DD, gg, cc.ff. Confusing :)
