Installing a twin spot internal pickup

Hey, I just installed two of these on my Sukar ouds.

I bought the K&K Twin Spot Internal and wanted to share some of what I found.

First - K&K says you need a 1/2'' drill (12mm) I have found this is NOT the case. It depends on where you want to put the pickup.

Also, the enpin cover looks aweful on the oud... so I chose to leave it off and there is just the nut and the washer showing...

I was worried about running into bracing or other weird stuff when I installed mine... so I stayed away from putting it where the different staves come together and opted to put it lower instead.

The endpin jack for the pickup has two widths... One is 3/8 and the other is 1/2 (further up the barrel)

If you choose to go through the backplate, you will need an 1/2 washer and nut since the 3/8 part is not long enough to go through the back piece as well as the staves. Sicne I was only looking to go through the body of the oud, I used a 3/8 bit since the clearance was correct for the smaller part of the endpin jack. It lined up perfectly.

Make sure you get this style of bit and not a normal round drill bit as this one cuts the wood better and you have less chance to chip

I used the picture from K&K to place the piezio pickups... except of course, mine are inside... I've used that placement though and it's gives a good sound externally

All in all, the procedure was pretty simple... though a little scary to drill into your instrument... But there was no change in the sound quality that I could tell between before and after...

Finally, I used some clear nail polish over the threads to act as a sort of cheap locktite... just to keep the nut from coming loose

I'll post some pics later

hi Chris. When you say you installed TWO K&Ks do you mean two separate sets or one with the two button transducers?
Is the photo just to show us where they are in relation to the underside of the oud. and yours are actually on the underside of the top? did you need to take off the rosette to work on the inside? Are you using any pre-amp?
thanks good buddy- MW

Hey Matthew, I installed them on two Sukar ouds.. not two on one oud... Sorry for the confustion...

I put the transducers just like in the photo above but only on the underside of the soundboard.

I'm using a LR Baggs gig-pro pre-amp... but I'm not wild about it and I get plenty of sound without the pre-amp...

No rosette, so I was in luck...
