Advice on getting concave oud neck straight

Hi there, first of all I want to say how glad I am to have found a serious forum for the oud world. Thanks everybody!

Can anybody give me an advice what to do, when the neck of the oud is bend concave so that the action has become bed?

By concave I mean that the nut and the region close to it is more up then the rest of the neck.

- Is it possible to straighten the neck?

or

- does the oud need a new one?

Thanks in advance

if this is the oud in question ... please tell me how to do the same on mine:

seriously - my advise would be to take it to a luthier, ask how much he would charge you to re-set the neck and then compare that cost with the price of a new oud.

Thanks Bill, I just dropped the Oud at Matthias Wagners Workshop - he happens to be some 30 km away from my place.

He also confirmed that the Oud is well made so that it's probabely worth to take care of the problem. And then: It's not so easy to come across such a big Oud: almost 62 cm string length 52cm body length, 37,5 cm width and 20,5 depth!

Regards

The oud neck is rarely the problem, usually it's the body bending from the string tension. The fix is to remove the neck and reset it at a lower angle to correct the action. The fingeboard will probably need some flatening to take out some string wear as well. Mathias is a fine luthier and will do a good job I'm sure.

I just brought the oud in question back from Matthias Wagners workshop and he did really marvelous job - it's in terms of playability like another instrument.

I also now can dare to tune it up a bit. So you were right, the oud was in good hands!
