Man this is a good group. Does anyone know the name of that first song they play? I think oum kalthoum sang it but I'm not sure. It sounds like oum
kalthoum.

I think this is a traditional piece of unknown origins called "Tahmilah Suznak" .
The Tahmilah part of the name being the musical form (like Semai or Doulab) and the maqam is Suznak.

I am very thankful that institutions like MIT feature performances by such good artists and that they make them available on the net. But wouldn't it
be so much better if they took the small additional step of using an audio feed direct from the house sound system, rather than relying on the often
very reverberant results from a microphone placed somewhere in the auditorium? Every member of the ensemble was close-miked, so a feed from the mixing
desk would have been so good.
Now before anybody jumps on me, let me repeat that I am extremely thankful to the MIT for supporting music of this kind and making it widely
available. But ...... if ony ...... !
