Sammy, I am old, Jewish and play the oud but I don't think I'm what you are looking for.

Check out Yacoub B'Chiri the 90+ yr old Jewish oud player of Djerba

Shalom Hevrei,

Also check out:

Salim Al Nur, an elderly Jew born in Baghdad who continued to compose and perform Arabic music in Israel: http://www.oud.eclipse.co.uk/nur.html (His CD is very hard to find).

Armand Sabach, a Moroccan Jew is Israel who plays oud on many recordings, inlcuding "Gazelle": http://www.magda.co.il/ (Look for Kol Oud Tof Trio in their catalogue).

Yair Dalal has an elderly Iraqi oudist, Yousef Yaqoub Shemtov play and sing one song ("Hada Mou Insaf Minak") with him, as an oud duet on his CD, "Samar."

There are many religious music recordings that include oud, but may not really feature it, that are made in Israel. The oud players are almost always AT LEAST 60 yrs. old.

Check out the recordings on the web site for Renanot Institute: http://www.renanot.co.il/ .

Also you can go to http://www.israel-music.com and search "Oriental" or "Chazzanut," then "Sephardic". On israel-music.com, you have to look a bit to find "traditional" records that don't use synthesizer, electric guitar, etc. My favorite of these is oudist/violinist Cantor Moshe Chabusha (Baghdadi heritage). You can sample 14 of his CDs.

Just for fun, you can hear a 37 year old Ashkenazi Jew (me, 3 years ago) play a couple of taqasim at: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/zaatarband2 (samples 1 and 8). I don't claim to be an Ustad, though!!!

Kol Tuv,
John "Udi Yohanan" Erlich

Sammy both my parents were born in the southern US, Macon Ga. and Jacksonville Fl. 3 grandparents from Aleppo Syria and 1 from Kilis Turkey. Grew up listening to a lot of Arabic music in the house. My dad played the oud so that is my exposure to oud. Imagine arabic and hebrew spoken with a southern accent.:D

I felt the world turned upside down and I entered the twilight zone, lol

I almost forgot,

Hakki Obadia is an Iraqi-Jewish oudist who lives (?) in New York. He immigrated to the US in 1948 to study at UC Berkeley (my alma mater!!). He has recorded two CDs, one of which is "Iraqi-Jewish and Iraqi Music," available at http://www.hatikvahmusic.com/cgi-bin/details.pl?key=772.

Don't forget that all seven instrumentalists who accompanied Iraqi Maqam master Muhammed El Qabbandji at the 1932 Cairo Arab Music Congress were Iraqi Jews. I don't know where you can buy Club Du Disque Arabe recordings these days, but volume II CD includes an oud taqsim.

Here is the catalogue info for the CD:

LE MAQAM EN IRAQ vol. I Congres du Caire 1932 / Mohamed Elkabandji / Iraqi singer Mohamed Elkabandji(1901-), etc. / CLUB DU DISQUE ARABE / Paris / 1994 / AAA087

Cheers,
John
