My Oud

Hi all,

Just wanted to share some pix of my new oud. I got this from Wa'el Kakish. The label inside says"Oud House, Amed Abd El Haliem" ... anyone familiar with this maker? To my inexperienced ears this oud sounds great. I'm very excited to begin learning.

Nice choice Lee. That was probably the best oud Wael had available. I would suggest changing the strings though to an Arabic set. If I remember correctly, they have the Turkish La Bella set on them right now. That oud looks and sounds real nice man. Good job and mabrouk!

Oud Strings

Thanks Mike,

I was thinking of ordering lute strings from Pyramid – is there a consensus on what set or string gauges to order - or should I just get one of the standard oud sets?

Hi Lee. Kaloriziko on the new oud, I'm glad you have a really nice oud now to continue with.

I'm very happy w/ the Pyramid Turkish style strings, they probably make great Arabic style strings too.

Happy New Year!

Hey Lee,

I don't really have any experience with lute strings. Maybe Sam or Ronny can help you out with that. But for me, the regular orange pack oud strings work out just fine. You will have to order a sixth bass string, or even just keep the one from the set you have on there right now. I don't think the gauge is all that much different.

Best of luck,
Mike

Hello, I am a new oud owner. Currently I play guitar, banjo and mandolin. I have a nice used 11 string oud that is from the Oud House, I bought it on e-bay. The edging around the soundboard on mine is little triangles of mother of pearl. Two of these appear to have fallen off. In addition, the finish on the soundboard of my oud is a bit thick, and I was thinking of stripping it and refinishing with a light shellac. Has anyone done this? The third course of strings sounds dead, unless I finger it about halfway down the finger board. All the other courses ring true. Also, the nut on mine is not in good shape. Has anyone found a precut nut source? Lastly, the pegs are really worn and will not hold the tune. Have been considering replacing with tuning machines. Any comments on this? Thanks for any consideration.

yeah the orange label is usaully the good one. but theres 2 kinds one with 1st and 2nd nylon and rest are in wound. what i recommend. u get a stronger pitch off of wound 3rd string. and theres is another where the 1st 3 strings are nylon and last 2 are wound. thats a more light sound. its what ever sound u prefer.
