9 string ouds? bridge question
Hi,
I've been offered an oud bought in Jordan which is currently strung with 9 strings rather than 11. It has 4 paired courses and a single string. The
seller tells me the oud has nut slots cut for 11 strings but it sounds like the bridge is only drilled for 9.
Is this common? What tuning would be used for a 9 string oud? is it the top C pair that's omitted?
The seller tells me the bridge is marked where the 10th and 11th strings would go but [as far as she can tell] doesn't seem to be drilled for them.
How easy would it be to drill these holes with the bridge still attached to the body? I have access to both a hand drill and power drill with all the
various bit sizes.
thanks
Matt

Hi Matt, I've had complete success drilling holes in the bridge, while still on the oud, with my dremel and 1mm bit held in the dremels flexi-shaft
p.s. also had five course oud GAdgc' - not the same oud, by the way, the holes
were drilled on a cheap Turkish ud, because they were out of alignment!

I think adding string courses to an oud not designed for the added tension is asking for trouble. Think about it.
