Introduction

Just wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Chris Walters and I live in Gastonia, North Carolina. Once upon a time I played bass guitar and I've always played by ear.

A few months ago, my wife got into bellydance and I thought it would be fun to pick up an instrument again. So I picked the Oud.... I got my first oud a few days ago and have been playing it pretty much non-stop.....

Here's what I picked up for about $250 USD....

In terms of sound quality, it's not very loud and it's certainly not the rich and deep tones I'm used to hearing... But I'm not noticing any buzz when I play it... so perhaps I just got lucky and have bought a cheap but serviceable instrument. (However, I'm pretty sure that I'll be in the market for a better one by Christmas)

Also, I downloaded the "oud tutor" program and that has helped me start to understand the fingerings. Also, youtube has been a big help.

The one thing that really hurts me is that I cannot read music.... In the past I've tried, and I can rough it out... but it's never been smooth..... So I play by ear....

So if anyone knows and links to MP3 or videos on the web that are of simple and easy songs, I would really enjoy seeing them.

Thanks in Advance
Chris

where did you download the oud tutor from?

And oudproff is a very good "oudist". He has published a maqamat cd which i have bought and followed by ear instead of notes. so if youre thingking of buying the cd buy it from ebay.

sincerely,

I got it off of Amazon.com... from Andreas, Inc.... I guess it's not bad for someone who wants to try the instrument out.... But I just bought a Sukar oud from SamirCanada and once you hear them side by side, there is no comparison... The Sukar oud has a far more pretty sound.

But, now I have an oud to lend out if I run into someone who is intersted in playing...
