Your thoughts on an oud...

Hey Guys & Gals,

I'm still looking around before I buy and I ran across an oud on Craig's list, linked below. Can anyone tell me something about this oud. The seller hasn't responded to my barrage of emails so my interest is fading. From looking at it does anyone know the maker or material it is made out of? Thanks.

-Losh

hi Losh- It looks a wee bit like a budget copy of a M Fadel oud, one of the all-time great oud makers ( a genuine Fadel oud sells for at least $3000 and upwards and upwards and upwards..:D). here is a link to one his ouds-

Anyway if the seller isn't getting back to you with any info that you request, then this might be a sign that there are some issues with it.
If there was a label inside and if the seller can tell you what it said ( if it had any English at all) or better still get a pic of it then this might help someone here to identify it. There are some great ouds coming out of Cairo, but also many tourist ouds! If you could get more info from the seller, it might help and might be worth $250.
hey come on guys, I'm no expert and there are some knowledgeable players out there who ought to be able to shed more light on this oud for Losh!

I think for the price its a decent looking oud.
of course much could be wrong with it but at that price you cant complain.
If its in perfect condition then in my opinion it could be worth as much as 600$.
Its an decent average oud coming from Cairo It could be from Abdel halim oud house.

I dont think its intended to be a Fadel copy since I dont think that is what the main rosette says. Its just what we call a oud made for the Gulf taste since the the coulour full woods is rather popular there.
Mohd Fadel used to make rather simple ouds with the classical look to them before he started selling ouds to customers in the Arab Gulf.
Traditionaly the players from the Gulf got their ouds from egypt and following trends set by Talal Maddah and Mohammed Abdo, they used to enjoy coulourfull ouds. Combinations of maple, paduk, ebony and rosewoods would make nice contrasts for the bowl.
Mohd Fadel started making very hornate ouds using different colour combinations when he started exporting ouds to kuwait and other khaleej nations.
I have never thought about it but it would be interesting to see what is the string lenght of the coulourful hornate fadel ouds.
Perhaps he even adapted the construction of his ouds in order to accomodate what the arabs of the gulf where used to.
