I'm afraid I'm no help, but this post did remind me of a scene in the film True Romance, where Dennis Hopper ensures a speedy end for his character by alluding to the arab influence in the bloodlline of Sicilian mafioso Christopher Walken. I'm not posting a link as it contains fairly offensive language - I hope people will take this reference in the spirit in which it's intended ;)

One thing that might make the search confusing is that you had arab rule prior to 1200 and then from 1400s to Napoleon it was Spanish... And there is LOTS of Arab influence in Spanish stuff... I used to live in Naples, so when get home tonight I'll check on some of the books I have from the Museam in Naples (there might be some Oud related art in there thats not on the web)

Is there anything in particluar you're looking for?

thanks chris - we live in tuscany. in particular i'd like to know if non-arab, eastern orthodox (christian) italians accepted the oud (however briefly) in the way that non-arabic spaniards did - based on illustrations from the cantigas de santa maria collection of songs:
