New strings and tuning

Hi,

I want to buy some new strings for the first time, and realised (since I'm new to oudism) that different sets of strings are available for different tunings. Right now, I use the tuning of FADGCF which is , as far as I know, the only one used in Sudan where I learnt to play Oud, and is also very common in Egypt. The only strings I have found for this tuning are the LaBella set. Does this mean that this is the only set that I can buy, or is it alright to buy other string sets, (like pyramid for example) and use this tuning?

Any help with this question will be greatly appreciated!

Salam Waddah,

I am sure you can use any brand for this tuning as far as I know, but first you should know what string length you have and then order your set accordingly.

I personaly like the Aquila nyl gut also Pyramids, Labella, Savariz they all sound great in this tuning,
By the way we have resident string providers in this very forum and the both very helpful, Jameel Khalaf and Mattias if you do searches within the forum I'm sure you'll find a wealth of information regarding tuning and strings.

Best of luck

Best Regards

Awad

Hi waddah,Awad,:wavey:
I play a turkish oud tuned on arab tuning DGADGC(from low to high). This is one tone lower than turkish tuning.
Ouestion:Where is the tuning you use located?Higher than turkish tuning?
I`m a bit afraid of tuning my oud this high because of the high tension.
If I tune a octave lower the strings are very loosey.Maybe I need another oud for this tuning?

Best regards

Marcus

Hello waddah,

if you go to my website and there to the download center you will find a PDF file about aoud strings and stringings. This file will give you a lot of informations about aoud stringing and lists a lot of string sets from various producers for different scales and tunings. Hope this helps you.

If some questions remains please contact me through my contact form.

Best regards Matthias
