Sudanese oud players
I was wondering if anyone could suggest some recordings of Sudanese oud players. The only artist I really know of is the late Hamza el-Din whose
recordings I listen to often. I would also be interested in finding out more about Moroccan oud players and whether or not the oud is used in any of
the ceremonial music. (I just came from a talk by Randy Weston about his experiences in Africa; very inspiring!)

Have a look out for a superb blind Sudanese player who plays with Mohammed Abdel Gadir on U Tube. Abdel Gadir is also a fine player too and If you can
source "Sounds of Sudan" Vol I ,II there is also Abdel Aziz Mubarak.

As Leon says, there's the famous Oudi Awad Abusin el Hulmi and he can probably point you in the direction of more stuff, but here's some stuff I'd
seen on youtube. No idea where you get recordings.
I think Hamza el Din isn't that typical of Sudanese oud players in general as he learned in Cairo and secondly because he was nubian and adapted his
technique to nubian songs that aren't traditionally played on oud.

Lastly, the trio Al Balabil (nightingale?) don't feature oud centrally, but I really like them anyway. There's that real sense of nostalgia for the
swinging 60s and 70s that you get in a lot of African music from this period.

I've got a couple of Abdel Gadir Salim's recordings . . . I really like the style.
I also have a recording by a Sudanese group called "Kambala" which is pretty cool too.
What I've really been enjoying though is Somalian oud players . . . that stuff is hard to find.

Thanks for the great info guys. Somali musicians....hmm...we have a fairly large community here in Toronto and I think there might even be a store
that sells records from Somalia, along with groceries. Thanks for that one Brian.

I'll keep you posted for sure Brian. First I have to find a cabbie and ask him where the store is. It seems like a lot of Somalis drive cabs here and
one guy told me that he sometimes goes to parties where they play music and sing all night. But he also said the oud was easy to play. (ha!)
