Arafati Ouds 2004

Here's some ouds built this spring by Mohammed Arafati of Tehran . The long narrow and shallow oud is very comfortable to hold and has the same deep tone as a wider deeper oud because it has the same body volume and tone wood area. He makes several styles and sizes of ouds and they all sound and play like the great master builders (like Nahat and/or Manol).

Hello Dr. Oud,

You wrote in your post that all of these Arafati ouds have the Nahat and/or Manol sound, so:

What is Arafati's design formula?

He must have cracked the old masters oud making secret code to be able to maintain the same sound with differnt shapes an sizes!

M. Arafati intends to write a book about oud making in the future and may include his formula for design. At the present time he is not publishing his research findings to protect his business and design rights.

The old master's secret code can only be speculated about since there are no recorded details. The different shapes and sizes may have been experiments or just naturally occurring variations, who knows?
