How to fix a Crack/Dent on the Bowl of an Oud OUCH!!

Hi!:wavey:

Can Somebody Help Me how can I Fix Damage on my Oud!

I accidentally bang the Side of the Bowl to my side panel door of my car. Ouch!!!! Ouch!! I have a Soft case but it still had a mark.

I hope it can be fixed I need Some Help all You Professional Oudist and Luthiers here in the site. Mr Faruk Turunz, Jameel, Dr.Oud, sabbassi, Alami and others not mentioned.

I hope I Can remedy the destruction I made on my Oud..

I almost cried last night when I saw the crack. OMG!:(

Is there any way to prevent this to not make the crack bigger in the future. Hopefully its not going to be larger.

My Thoughts are:

1. I think the crack line(white line) is from the laquer or finish that had been broken.

2. If You feel and touch the crack. Basically I can feel a dent line going inside but not that depth.

3. I hope its just the Paint that crack. But it very annoying to see that white crack line. Hopefully its not very deep into the wood.

I'm very sad about what happen.

I want to know if this crack will be longer or bigger in the following years..........

Your comments and advise would be most appreciated.......

Please Help Me...........

Is there Anyway I can erase that crack line?

Thanks Guys........:applause:

Greetings from Dubai

Philip:airguitar:

P.S: Its Very difficult to take a decent picture. Its not as clear but I hope You all See the crack.

Hi Philip,

it's a bit hard to see ... the camera didn't focus correctly on the "crack", but in front or the background.

As it seems, it's only a dent in the varnish, maybe slightly in the wood too ... nothing that will get bigger, I think.

I would expect, that it should be possible to make it unvisible with colored varnish ... you got luck, I think, it's only a small line.

But better photos would be helpful first to see, if my thesis is correct. Try the following ... hold a single page of a newspaper plane besides the "crack". That helps the camera's autofocus to focus on the right place and not in front. And use more light, that the cam uses a smaller aperture, which gives more depth of field ... "sharper image".

first you need to identify what the finish is so that the repair is compatible. Frets.com has some good instruction for identifying and repairing finishes - scroll down to the finish links.

Yep ... the more light, the better. I think it's better to first see the dent as good as possible. Check out if your cam has a macro mode, so that you can get as close as possible.

Ideally super macro mode and good lighting from an angle so we can really see how deep it is.

From superficial photos like these it could be anything from "impact deeply punched in the rib so that it cracked the varnish", to "the top varnish layer barely scratched".

I don't think so, but hey ... where are the better photos? Any photography problems, I might help with?

I would make better photos and email them to Mr. Shehata ... let's hear, what the master recommends, don't you think so?

Hi Philip

I also live in Dubai.

Try to speak to Nasser at Music Chamber ( 04 3316416) in the Crown Plaza building and see if he can help you. You can tell Nasser that I gave you his number.

If Nasser cannot help, there is a lebanese guy at Sadiq Music shop in Midenah Jumeirah who may be able to help you. I think his name is Charlie (not sure though). Sadiq Music shop have a workshop in Sharjeh where they make ouds.

Good luck
