Cutting a nut for my oud

I have played guitar for many years and have been listening to oud music for about four. I bought one on eBay last year.
I was told it is Syrian and made of walnut.
The nut is cut for five course of strings and I'd like to add a low D to my GADGC tuning.
I have two options:

1 I think there is enough space to cut the existing nut to take an extra string but I don't know what tools to use. Hacksaw? Fine files? A combination?

2 I have bought a blank bone guitar nut But I want to gather some information about shaping it before starting.

Can anyone advise please?
