Anyone tried those pegs?
Hi all Oud community,
Have anyone tried those mecanical pegs mecanical pegs
The idea is interesting, since you loose much less time tuning your Oud, I want to know if anyone tried them before testing them.

I just had an instrument built a few weeks ago. The luthiere's main complaint was about my choice of "medium size" viola pegs.
That size made it tricky for him to drill the holes in the peg-box. He preferred the small diameter size. I suggest that you contact your luthiere
first before ordering the pegs.

I think there are two sizes commonly used for wood pegs:
Viola pegs: from 8 mm to 10 mm diameter over 5 cm, taper 30:1
Violin pegs: from 7 mm to 9 mm diameter over 5 cm, taper 30:1
The mechanical pegs are mostly designed to fit violins. Oud pegs are usually closer to the Violin pegs, but they are irregular and the taper ranges
from 12:1 to 20:1. That might mean that some existing holes on an instrument will be too big to accept Violin pegs. Either it will need bushings, or
the Viola size is safer, but with wooden viola pegs many would need shaving down.
The different mechanical pegs have their own requirements, so go slow. The Gotoh pegs for instance come in different lengths but on some ouds I
measured none of the available sizes would fit in all 11 positions.

My pegs are walnut, will have to see if I can find some head replacement for those pegs like what Mister Khalaf did on his blog.
I will measure the distance in my oud and see, may be I'll order a set of 4 to start and see after, I have some friends in the band playing violin I
should sell them to them easily.

I'm finding it difficult getting full info about the cheaper mechanicals. All luthiers are eager (even) to install 12 Perfection Pegs for us for
several hundred dollars, but that's bloody expensive.
On the other hand I have found improving the existing holes and pegs gives a smooth and usable solution for the cost of some tools, say $80 spread
over all of one's ouds. I'm working on a general approach and will post it if it works out.
