ungluing a soundboard

Hello,

I buy a broken oud to try to repair it and understand how it's done.

Some pics first

I still do not know if I'll replace the soundboard or if it's repairable.
I begin to unglue the soundboard, it's almost done but I have difficulties to unglue the braces from the ribs.
I'll try from the inside, and find a metallic tool with an 90° angle to heat where the braces are glued.
If anyone faces this problem, share your solution.
Thanks and à bientôt
Mohamed

Interresting pattern around the rosette. I like it.
A sort of 'shammed shamsa'

Bonne chance et bon courage pour la réparation.

Braces unglued with the best tool we can find : patience !
I first unglued the braces as far as possible under the soundboard so I can pull it and access to the part glued on the ribs.
Thanks for your encouragement Microber, the pattern could be better, the picture is low quality, it's not fine professional work, with all my respect to the maker (I can't still do the same)
I don't know how this oud get in this condition fernanraynaud, the buyer told me he found it in the house he bought. The strings were still in tension when it came to me...

The next difficulty now : unglue the soundboard from the neck bloc. I tried and I tried... with a hot blade, but it seems that the glue is stronger than the glue used for the braces.
Who tried to unglue with a smoothing-iron (fer à repasser) over the soundbord ?
Thank you for your comment.

Done.

Is the soundboard repairable ? For sure I'll replace the braces.
I'll repair the bowl and see later if I build a new soundboard or not.

The scorching indicates you used too high of heat to soften the glue. Next time try some warm water and heat a thin palette knife over a candle or low gas flame to pry the joint apart. The usual method is to remove the edging first, then the ends of the ribs are easy to pry away from the ribs. You will need to remove the edging anyway to fit the ends of the braces tightly to the inside of the top ribs.

I would not replace any braces, but you could thin them with a small plane or carefully with a chisel.Tape a steel rule on the face so you don't gouge it when the chisel slips. Use hide glue for everything. The cracks/splits can be re-glued, held together temporarily with masking tape, and reinforced on the inside with parchment paper (from the art supply store), with hide glue under and over the paper.

The rib is easily re-glued, also held with tape and reinforce with paper.

Thanks a lot for your advices Dr. Oud

"The scorching indicates you used too high of heat to soften the glue"
-> I used a gas flame to heat my stanley knife, too much heat for sure, but some places were strongly glued.
"try some warm water"
-> I'm afraid using water on the soundboard, but if you say I can, I will.

"The usual method is to remove the edging first"
-> the decoration on the edging are inlaid in the soundboard (1/3 of the thickness), that's why I unglued the braces far under the soundboard to be able to raise it and access to the end of the braces.

"I would not replace any braces"
-> raising the soundboard to unglue the braces was not comfortable for me, and some braces were cut, about 3 mm are missing on most of them
Tow braces were already broken. Really don't know if I can use them, and I've already unglued them.

Thanks again

Mohamed

" I used a gas flame to heat my stanley knife,"
Use a thin palette knife (art supply or craft store) it requires less heat and does less damage.

" I'm afraid using water on the soundboard, but if you say I can, I will."
I'm saying you can, I do it all the time. Use a small brush and a small amount of water, preferably at 140 F, hot, but not boiling. A fondue pot or a baby bottle warmer are about the right temperature.

"the decoration on the edging are inlaid in the soundboard (1/3 of the thickness), that's why I unglued the braces far under the soundboard to be able to raise it and access to the end of the braces."
OK,inlaid edging is not usual and need some other approach. I would have just cut it off and replaced it with new edging glued to the full edge of the face. Inlaid edging is a guitar technique, not normally used in traditional oud making, since the oud face is so much thinner. (Guitar = 3-5mm, Oud = 0.5 - 1mm).

"Two braces were already broken. Really don't know if I can use them, and I've already unglued them"
Replace broken braces yes, re-glue any whole braces. a IF it was synthetic glue, clean all the old glue from the joint. If it softens with warm water, you can re-glue it with a little more hide glue.
