munir bashir risha technique
in a thread relating to risha made from eagle's feather, over on the lute list, ronnie suggested that its proper use - method of play - is taught
in arabic universities.
this has probably been discussed many times but could someone explain briefly:
- what makes munir bashir's risha technique and the iraqi style of play different from others?
- does risha made with eagle's quill require a different technique; different from ordinary plectrum - thin, super-plyable horn in particular?

Bashir eagle risha technique is one of several style of Iraqi style of playing. His taqasims are different also and together with his genius and
virtuosity created a new way of playing. Unfortunately there are few who follows his steps and that is because his right hand virtuosity is
unreachable for the majority of oud players and his compositions are of the same calibre. Just count the numbers oud players who are playing his
works.

Yes Bill, the typical feature for the risha Bashir played with, is the Iraqi tradition to store it in olive oil that produces a risha of unique
qualities. The eagle risha needs a very good control by the player since it's so soft , slim and flexible which make it more difficult to produce
a good tone with than plastic or horn. You would need to sit down with player for a demo to fully understand its intricate technique. Many times one
can read simplifications off risha technique by players who never have studied different materials for risha and right hand technique.
