Sound hole positioning
I have noticed on ebay some new ouds with, to my eyes, a bizarre arrangement of the soundholes:

Is there any reason for this? If anything, I would think that I would tend to at least partially obscure the bottom soundhole with my forearm at
times.
I am not asking for an opinion on the oud--looks like the usual ebay tourist quality stuff. But, is this arrangement of the soundholes something new
and is there any advantage to it?

Sound holes
Hello fine people
I do not know why this is oud has been made as such but I honestly felt that it is an insult to the oud standards.

Im not aware of any "oud standards", but the maker may have moved the treble side hole to activate more of the face on that side. Perhaps he
was attempting to emulate the soundhole positioning of the Kasha Guitar Design where the sound hole is moved to the upper quadrant of the bass side. This is the least active place on the soundboard. Modern guitar makers have been moving soundholes for some time. Anyway, here's a Tunisian oud with another soundhole arrangement outside of
the "oud standards."

I have noticed that the two smaller holes are moved to the bass side which maybe due to the idea of making the soundboard (the top) lighter near the
bass strings so that there would be less resistance (dampening of oscilation) due to inertia (mass) in vibrating at the low frequency and have a
larger amplitude (louder and more sustain.)

For analysing why that oud was made as such. I admit that I am ignorant in the oud making rules. I am also not aware of what the oud making standards
are if there is any.
When I saw that weird looking oud, a question came to my mind... How come we never seen such oud made by any of the very well known oud makers? Is it
because they are all old fashion or is it because maybe there are what I called it "oud standerds".
This is very interesting topic .. I'd like more members to get invoved please

A little weird,
I think we are over analysing this,
I think the maker is just trying to make a new-look oud statement. He probably wants to deviate from the norm. All his other ouds are made according
to the regular look (three symmetrical rossettes or one). If this shape had any significance, he would use it with his other instruments as well.
Anyway, no offense, but I think its a little weird, like one of the holes fell to the side while he was holding it upside down or something like
that.

This is the so called Andalusian oud: Kuitra.
Comes with frets!

I don't think that's the case about having frets because the description states that it is fretless!

Besides, if we take a closer look to the location of top sound hole. I think a lot of oud players may have their arm covering it while they play. I
would.

The hand swinging in front would be one way to get the wa-wa effect here. In the old keyboards, the speakers rotated.
