Tuning peg sizes?
I see that Dov Schmidt offers oud pegs with 61mm Shaft length, with either 7-9mm or 8-10mm taper, total length 89mm. So that's modern std. 30:1 taper?
He also offers "damascus nahat replica" ones. $19 for 12.
Has anyone tried ANY of these pegs? If not where are people on the American continent getting replacement pegs? Size? Taper? Reamer adventures?

I tried out a set of Dov's pegs. They're nice. The proportions are a bit odd to me, but they are a standard 30:1 taper.
I also carry oud pegs, but my supply is a bit limited right now.
I have boxwood (1 set left) and some rosewood with inlay:

I usually sell the rosewood with MOP for $32, but they are on sale for the next week for $27.

Thanks, Brian. What was odd about Dov's pegs? Which ones did you try, the "Nahats", or the 7-9 or the 8-10 others? Did you use a standard 30:1 reamer?

They were fine, I just thought that the size of the the knobs relative to the shaft was a bit strange, but nothing crazy. I'll try to take a picture
comparing the two so you can see.
They're perfectly good, and a good value I think.

Yes. I have tried both oud peg designs from Dov.
In Walnut, Rosewood and Ebony, and in both shaft sizes.
They are good, and the Walnut ones look softer and especially good with older ouds.
The smaller shafts are usually big enough unless the pegholes have really been enlarged and you do not want to bush and reream them.
You could get both sizes and match them better to the holes.
I also use viola pegs (longer shafts than violin pegs) from Dov and shape them down with the peg shaper. More variety of peghead designs to choose
from.
Another source of oud pegs is Cankaya Musik in Istanbul. I stocked up a bunch on my last trip.....

I have some viola rosewood pegs, but shaving them was too difficult. I had set my shaver to the taper of my reamer, I just checked, the reamer tapers
2mm over 60 mm, so 30:1. The viola pegs were 8-10mm but over a 50 mm shaft, making them 25:1. And stubby. Good to hear the oud pegs were ok. On one
oud the 7-9s will work better, on another the 8-10s. Thank you!
