2 strngs or 3?
Hi Samir,
I thought the Buzok had 3 courses (3 sets of doubled strings) – I know I've seen them that way before at least.

tow kinds of stringing
you are right Lee
in Turkey and Kurdistan ,they use 3 pairs of strings for their Buzoks( Tanbour),but in our music it is rare to use more than two, prince Muhammed Abdel
Karim used just two for his geniuos performance..
sometimes some players add 1 single DO.
the main thing is how to use the strings and in which style of playing..

Beautiful playing!
Being of Greek heritage myself I am particularly interested in the connection between arabic music and the pre-Rebetiko music of the Greeks in Asia
Minor.
The original Bouzouki had 3 strings and I'm convinced that it probably had tied on frets to accommodate the microtones of turkish/arabic maqams.
Now days Greeks don't play in the original style, Bouzouki's have 4 strings and well-tempered frets and really aren't suited for the
original style of music.
I was thinking that I could adapt an arabic Buzok to play the Trichordo Bouzouki music in the tuning D-A-D but I'd need one more string set to do
that. A Tanbour is not really appropriate and a Saz also doesn't work - the sound is just too soft and buzzy.
What do you think?

Hi,
Just an interesting note, my oud teacher has an old Josef bouzouki that is actually a 7 string, three courses with two unwound strings on the bass
string. The neck is also very long, more like a saz than the more modern bouzoukia. Plenty of people still play the three course bouzoukia today.

An Arabic bouzouk is probably the way to go Lee, which would go with the Asia Minor music.
Take care,
mav

THE ARAB MASTER OF BUZOK MATAR MOHAMMAD
Hi all,
I thank you for including the Buzok in the oud forum, I think Buzok is Oud little brother.
the file I'm including is for the late Matar Mohammad from Lebanon, He's the one and only when it comes to Buzok in the Arab land.
this is a Bayati piece. the intro has drum that is actually him tapping on the sound board. Incredible
enjoy

Love the sound
The sound in your video is great. For some reason it comes across much better on my system than the audio files you have posted.
We'll talk soon about a 3-string Buzok!
