Tharwat Saber is one of the living "not bad" luthiers in Cairo.
His sons Maged, Maher & Ramy have joined in, promoting their father's production. As young as they are, they're pretty active in the net. They
tape their ouds & upload them to youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e_brUqypNk), they have joined facebook (https://ar-ar.facebook.com/TharwatSaber1), they make what's needed to put their father "on the map" & they seem to manage.
A great luthier of my acquaintances used to say: "I don't want any promotion nor advertising for my ouds. My oud makes the whole job for me" !
Therefore pushing things into one's throat is not a kind of things I'd like or choose.
I haven't seen nor tried any of these ouds, but a reliable Egyptian friend of mine, on whom I count, had decided to try one of Saber's ouds and placed
an order . He told me: "It's good, but not superior, fair price with no defects but poor wooded. Not bad you may quote me". End of quotation !
Well, I am sad to say so, but there's no great Egyptian new ouds nowadays . Maybe Shehata's workshop manages to produce one of more a year, but all
the others', including late Fathy Amin's son, Tharwat Saber, Morad Torky etc... are the same like "Jawharat Al Fann" commercial ouds. You may get
lucky and find a great one, but luck should not play the main role in choosing an oud.
