Innovation must be based on a serious "classical/traditional" background to be relevant.
I may be wrong, but I think evolution is intrinsic to Arabic music, which makes it difficult to apprehend and so easy to be assimilated by Western
music.
To stick to the topic, the use of glissando can be very subtle and used to modulate from maqam Rast to maqam Ushshaq for exemple: note Sikah less one
comma only! (Here commas have more to do with the feeling than with a unit of measurement)
