Tuning Problems and Solutions

There have been a number of recent topics concerning problems with pegs, strings and other issues affecting tuning of an oud.
The text of a talk given by Gordon Gregory to the Lute Society in London may therefore be of some interest. Although directed towards lute players much of what is written applies also to oudists or players of other related instruments fretted or otherwise.

Thanks, that's very helpful. Interesting about the meters, I'm leaning towards actually using a tuning fork after being driven mad by my Korg's 'needle' hopping around all over the place. But it may not be the tuners fault, my oud is very much a work in progress... - Mark

There are some good tuners for PC and iPhone/iPad. The Pano tuner for iPhone costs like $1 and is a gem, even though it was strictly equal temperament as of the last time I updated. Some of that lute stuff doesn't apply to oud, including the advice to change strings so often.
