New (to) Oud
Hello All-
I'm new to the Oud -- I haven't even picked one up. I've been listening to alot of M. Bashir and A. Brahem and am totally taken up with the Arabic
Oud. I can't stop playing these cds -- my girlfriend wants to kill me! How does one begin to play? Should I buy a student model and learn some
Maqams? I don't know if there are any teachers in my area (Southern California). Also, if I do buy one, what sort should I get? I don't wany
anything fancy, but I do want something well made, something that sounds good and won't fall apart in a year. Should I look at a Najarian student
model? Any recommendations on wood, style (Iraqi, Egyptian, Syrian...) etc? Thanks so much!
Benjamin

Hey Benjamin,
Welcome to the world of ouds. I suggest getting in touch with Wael Kakish in Pasadena. He's a local SoCal guy who gives oud lessons, and he directs a
local Middle Eastern ensemble. His email is kzaman@kanzaman.org.
Good luck,
Mike
