playing ensemble
it's difficult to hear my oud sometimes when playing with others - especially when amplified. i was about to take a solo last night when i heard -
faintly - that a peg had let a string slip. jammed altogether, surrounded by microphones ... couldn't walk away and tune up ... what to do?
i was thinking i could attach something to my oud with an ear-phone. in terms of costume however ... not terribly medieval.

Playing with a string out of tune , without any time to tune it because we're on stage and in a middle of an air, is a frequent experience, on oud or
others stringed instrument.....
Marina is right....continue to play....light at possible on the bad string and try to find harmonics around....and smile, of course!

About the sudden loss of color: various spot lights...?
The knocking of the knees is hard to keep in time with assymetric rythms....may be fold one's legs.....

I would suggest to end the song as gracefully as possible and then switch to a backup Oud on stage.... For the upcoming Ren Faire gig I have a second
oud and about a week or two out, I'll loosen the stings and reapply peg dope to keep the pegs from slipping... We're tight on space, but I figure
it's worth the hassle not to have to worry about it....
The only issue I have is that if I have to switch ouds, they have slightly different tones coming from the pizieos.... but I can turn the mic volume
up a bit to compensate.
Also, what about a stage monitor so you can hear better during the performance?

forget peg dope, use PVA glue
It's good to see that I'm the only fake mediaeval out there,
long live the plectrum lute (oud with gut frets)
